Buying Guide · cookie depositor dough feeding system selection
Specify Dough Feeding for a Cookie Depositor Line
Choose a cookie depositor's dough feeding method from the real mixer discharge and run pattern. A depositor may meet its quoted forming rate yet wait for manual refills or receive inconsistent hopper levels if the upstream transfer is unspecified.

Map the mixer-to-hopper transfer
State mixer bowl size, batch mass, dough type, inclusions, temperature range and how often a fresh batch arrives. Show the physical route from mixer to depositor, including lift height, ceiling clearance and space for the emptied bowl. Ask who moves the bowl and how much time the transfer takes during a normal shift.
Equipment makers offer different approaches. Polin describes a mixer-bowl lifter or tilter feeding a depositor hopper in the manufacturer example linked below. The suitable approach still depends on dough behaviour and the bakery's room, not on an advertised machine rate.
Compare replenishment methods
A manual loading plan should name the container, safe handling height, operator and refill frequency. A bowl tipper should define compatible bowls, guarding, discharge control and cleaning access. A more automated feeder should describe transfer mechanism, hopper level sensing and how it responds when dough supply is low.
FME describes a feeder with a hopper level sensor in the manufacturer example linked below. Treat that as an example of a configuration choice, not proof that every dough can be handled the same way. Request a demonstration with the actual dough or a representative formulation when flow, inclusions or stickiness are uncertain.
Protect product quality through the handoff
Ask where dough waits, how long it is exposed, whether it is compressed or sheared during transfer, and how the first and last deposits of a refill are checked. The feeding specification should state the acceptable hopper-level range or control method only after a representative trial establishes that it matters for the product.
Define cleaning and allergen changeover access for every transfer surface. The quotation comparison approach below is useful for listing included equipment and site services, but the dough-feeding trial needs its own acceptance observations.
Write an RFQ that exposes missing scope
Ask for a flow drawing from mixer discharge to depositing, the operator tasks per batch, compatible bowl drawings, line controls, cleaning method, utility needs and guarded access points. Ask whether the feeder, lift, hopper extension and sensors are included or priced separately.
During acceptance, record the dough formulation, batch size, feed method, refill event, depositor speed, portion consistency and any interruptions. A test at only steady-state full-hopper operation may miss the exact problem the feeding system is meant to solve.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every cookie depositor need an automatic feeder?
No. Compare refill frequency, labour, dough handling and cleaning with the actual production schedule.
Can a feeder handle any dough?
Do not assume so. Test the intended formulation, inclusions and temperature with the proposed transfer design.
What should the quotation include?
Request the lift or feeder, hopper interface, sensors, guards, cleaning access, controls and installation responsibilities.
