Buying Guide · tunnel oven solid vs perforated steel belt selection

Choose a Tunnel Oven Steel Belt Surface

Choose a tunnel oven band from the products and process you intend to run. Solid and perforated steel surfaces can serve different baking and drying needs, but the right choice also depends on product release, cleaning and the oven design. Put those conditions in the RFQ before comparing prices.

Choose a Tunnel Oven Steel Belt Surface

Start with the product underside and release

List the product families, dough or batter condition at loading, and the underside finish you need after baking. Note whether sticky or high-fat material could pass through openings or leave residues. IPCO offers both solid and perforated steel bake-oven belts and says the surface choice depends on the product and process.

Ask the oven supplier how each candidate band supports the actual product. A smooth band may be attractive for clean release, while an open surface may suit a different drying or airflow requirement. Do not assume either band is universally better, or that a belt can be changed later without other conveyor work.

Check the whole oven-band interface

Specify usable width, product lanes, loading pitch, planned speed range and how the product transfers at the infeed and outfeed. Ask for the proposed belt material and surface, support arrangement, tracking method and cleaning access in one drawing. These are system choices, not a stand-alone belt purchase.

If the oven will handle several products, identify the most difficult one to release and the one with the greatest drying need. The supplier should explain how the proposed surface and heating configuration cover both, or state clearly where a compromise remains.

Trial representative products and cleaning

Agree a product trial with the actual recipe and a representative run length. Observe spreading, sticking, underside colour, breakage at discharge and residue after the run. Record oven settings and band speed so a favourable sample can be tied to repeatable conditions.

Ask how the belt and return path are cleaned, inspected and made safe for access. A product that releases well but leaves hard-to-remove deposits may change the operating decision. Confirm the cleaning method against the exact belt and oven supplier instructions.

Request a quotation with open assumptions visible

The offer should identify band type, material, width, interface parts, cleaning provisions and who owns installation and commissioning. Separate proven trial results from estimates or examples from another line.

Keep unresolved product compatibility and any future band-conversion scope as written questions. That lets the buyer compare complete oven proposals rather than treating a band label as a performance guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a solid steel band always easier to clean?

Its smooth surface can help, but cleaning depends on the product residue and the complete oven arrangement. Verify the proposed method.

Can I specify one band for cookies and crackers?

Possibly. Trial the actual products and ask the supplier to document any compromise in release or drying.

Is replacing a mesh belt with steel a simple swap?

Do not assume so. The oven supplier must assess drums, support, tracking, heating and transfer interfaces.
